GoldBod, UMaT to support licensed small-scale miners with funding from 2027

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), will provide financial and technical support to licensed small-scale miners and cooperative mines from 2027 under a new formalisation and financing programme.

GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi said the initiative would support miners in key areas, including geological investigations, concession viability assessments, equipment financing, land reclamation and mercury-free processing.

Under the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining Formalisation and Financing Support Programme (FFSP), the Board will also provide other forms of capital and technical assistance to licensed operators.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Mr Gyamfi said: “The Ghana Gold Board in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology, will provide financing support in the area of geological investigations, concession viability, equipment financing, land reclamation, mercury-free processing and other forms of capital and technical support to licensed small-scale miners and licensed cooperative mines beginning 2027.”

The initiative is expected to complement the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), which seeks to bring eligible informal miners into the formal mining sector through cooperative registration, training and licensing.

GoldBod is collaborating with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to support the implementation of the formalisation programme as part of its statutory mandate to promote the formalisation of small-scale mining.

Mr Gyamfi said the financing initiative aligned with the National Democratic Congress’s 2024 manifesto commitments on the mining sector.

The programme is expected to begin in 2027, although the statement did not specify the amount of funding to be made available or the terms under which financial support will be provided.
