Residents of Shama, a town in the Shama District Assembly, have raised disturbing concerns about a water crisis that has persisted in most communities in the area for almost a year.
According to residents in some areas like DC Bungalow, Areeba Poll, Roman Park, Roman Church and some parts of Beach Road, all in Shama, the issue has persisted since February 2026 to date.
Some say the situation leaves them walking for several miles with their children before securing water for bathing and effective and clean household chores. They lamented that this has affected the effective school attendance of their wards for some months now.
Health-wise, a pregnant woman sadly lamented the caesarean section (CS) she underwent due to her daily routine of carrying heavy cans because of the water crisis.
“I’m a pregnant woman, and I have to be forced to carry heavy things full of water, and as a result, I had a miscarriage and had to be operated on.”
One opinion leader angrily admitted that their long-term water crisis makes them feel they are not part of Shama Township.
“I don’t think we’re part of Shama, because if Water Works says they can’t pump water to reach our area, then we’re not counted as part of Shama,” an opinion leader asserted.
They appealed to the authorities to come to their aid because the water crisis is making life unbearable for them.
“We have to spend about GH¢120 every day before getting access to clean water for our family, and it’s too much for us.”
